"There's not a lot more I can say after that. It's one of those things, it's lap one … more than anything, lap one incidents are the worst.
"I felt like it was clear in Turn 8, that I'd backed off enough to follow the line there, and then at the apex I didn't expect to touch – I thought we were clear, and before you knew it I was in the back of (Haas driver) Kevin (Magnussen). That turned him around – I tried to avoid the second part, but that was that.
"It sucks for both of us, being out lap one. Let's end the year with a better one in Abu Dhabi."
How Daniel's race unfolded
* Started 11th, out on first lap after contact with Magnussen/Haas at Turn 8.
Next race
Round 22: Abu Dhabi (Yas Marina Circuit), 20 November
Last race (2021): qualified 10th, finished 12th
Career: 11 races, 50 points, 2 fastest laps, 6 points finishes
Best finish: 4th (2014, 2018)
Abu Dhabi highlights: Daniel's 12th race at the Yas Marina Circuit matches Spa in Belgium as the track where he's made his second-most F1 starts; he's only raced at Silverstone more times in F1 (13 starts). Daniel's two standout moments in the Emirates have come with fastest laps, in 2014 where he stormed from the back of the grid to finish fourth, and in 2020, where he finished seventh in his final race for Renault and set the fastest lap on his last race lap with the team. He's made Q3 on six of his past seven visits to the circuit, while fourth places for Red Bull Racing in 2014 and 2018 (the latter being his final race with the team) are his best results.
